CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men’s soccer team defeated California 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.
Arnau Farnos scored the game’s only goal, as he netted his second tally of the season. Oregon State out-shot California 19-6 in the contest, despite playing the final 22 minutes with 10-men following a second-half red card.
The Beavers also played the contest without the services of leading goal-scorer Logan Farrington, who was unavailable due to yellow card accumulation.
Oregon State was on the front-foot early on, as it earned a pair of corner kicks within the first two minutes of the contest. The Beavers took the lead in the 20th, as Farnos unleashed an absolute rocket from 19 yards out that smashed off the post and into the net.
The Beavers dominated the run of play for the remainder of the first half, out-shooting Cal 9-1 in the period to head to the break leading 1-0.
Ellis Spikner nearly doubled the advantage early in the second half, as he headed the ball just over the crossbar. Javier Armas put the ball in the net in the 54th minute, but was whistled for a foul before the shot.
Spikner had two more chances in the 65th and 66th minutes, but was unable to finish off the opportunities.
Oregon State was reduced to 10-men in the 69th minute, but OSU continued to generate scoring chances. Fran Cortijo notable curled a free kick just outside the post in the latter stages of the contest.
Luis Castillo made a pair of saves in the Oregon State net, as he recorded his second clean sheet of the season.
The Beavers will hit the road next week for matchups with UCLA and San Diego State.
