CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team opened its four-day run at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a split through their first two contests.
Game 1: Wisconsin 3, Oregon State 2
Wisconsin took advantage of a Grace Messmer error before slugging a two-run home run for the decisive scoring in a 3-2 win for the Badgers over Oregon State on Thursday morning. Eliana Gottlieb got the Beavers on the board with a first inning home run before Morgan Howey drove in Kaiea Higa on a second inning fielder’s choice.
Logan Hulon got tagged with the loss following yielding the two-run hit by the Badgers. She threw 3.0 frames and struck out one. Ellie Garcia, the game’s starter, threw 4.0 innings, gave up a run and struck out a pair.
Game 2: Oregon State 7, Bethune-Cookman 3
Completing a two-game sweep of Bethune-Cookman after taking the season opener, Oregon State bounced back with five third-inning runs to set the tone in the afternoon game en route to the four-run win.
Using four hits on five at-bats, the Beavers put up their insurmountable lead that Bethune-Cookman couldn’t chip away at. RBI singles came from the bats of Lici Campbell, Maddy Clark and Kiki Escobar while Messmer had a RBI double.
With a comfortable lead at 5-1, Abby Doerr connected for her first home run of the season to deep right.
Sarah Haendiges picked up the complete game win, going the distance where she struck out five to just walking one.
Gottlieb and Messmer collected a game-high two hits apiece while five others added five to the OSU ledger.
Oregon State will continue play in the Mary Nutter with a Friday night matchup with UCF set for 8:30 p.m.
