HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Freshman Ting-Hsuan Huang shot under par for the first time in her Oregon career on Monday while leading the UO women’s golf team in the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club.
Huang finished with a 1-under 70, putting her in a tie for 15th individually and just three strokes off the lead through 18 holes. The No. 9 Ducks sit in 16th place after carding a 12-over 296.
How it Happened: Huang got off to a bit of a slow start with three bogeys through her first seven holes, but she caught fire with four birdies in a six-hole span to get under par. Huang closed her round with four straight pars to finish with her best round yet as a Duck.
Fellow freshman Kiara Romero – the No. 5 ranked player in the nation entering this week – also got off to a slow start and was 4 over through four holes. Romero responded with two birdies and finished her day with 10 consecutive pars to come in with a 3-over 74.
Senior Minori Nagano and sophomore Anika Varma each finished with a 5-over 76 to round out the counting scores for the Ducks.
