Beavers Fall in Road Trip Finale to Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The Oregon State softball team dropped their road trip finale to Grand Canyon on Monday afternoon, 7-3.

Grand Canyon struck early, plating three in the first off a home run to straightaway center following consecutive base hits to lead the frame off. An inning later, Abby Doerr’s single to the warning track plated the first OSU run as Madison Simon dashed from first to cross home. Grand Canyon responded back in the second with a solo shot to bring their lead back to three at 4-1.

Madyson Clark launched her second home run of the season to left field, scoring Grace Messmer to trim the lead to just one in the fourth. In the ensuing half-inning, the Lopes responded with a two-run home run of their own to stretch their lead back to three at 6-3.

Grand Canyon added a run in the sixth off a sacrifice fly to left to push their lead to four.

Oregon State threatened with loading the bases in the seventh but could not bring anyone across to score.

Sarah Haendiges (7-4) was tagged with the loss as she gave up the first three Lopes runs. The Upland, Calif., native allowed four hits but struck out one in just one inning. Tossing 4.0 frames in relief, Ellie Garcia yielded four runs on six hits and a walk. Logan Hulon pitched the sixth and retired three via strikeout.

Lici Campbell and Clark led the Beaver offense with a pair of hits each, while Abby Doerr had one. Clark and Doerr were responsible for driving in the OSU runs.

Oregon State will be back in action on March 27th at Seattle U following an off week. First pitch against the Redhawks is slated for 5:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
