Brent Blaylock Named Executive Deputy AD/COO For Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Brent Blaylock was named Executive Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer, Oregon State Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Barnes announced Wednesday.

“Brent brings an incredible array of experiences and background that will serve our student-athletes and entire department very well,” Barnes said. “Brent has a proven track record in effectively leading at the Power 5 level, and I look forward to partnering with him as we continue to navigate uncharted waters. Our focus continues to be putting our student-athletes in the best and highest position, and I’m confident Brent will contribute mightily to our plans.”  

Blaylock’s responsibilities at Oregon State include serving as the Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and providing leadership in various capacities. It includes leading OSU’s sports supervisory team, where he will serve as the sport supervisor for football, men’s basketball, baseball and other sports as assigned. Blaylock will also head the NIL program and oversee all student-athlete development units.

He will serve as the lead of multiple internal operations units, including facilities, capital projects and various student-services programs. Blaylock will also head the Student-Athlete Development program and serve as a liaison to the Academic Services for Athletes.

Blaylock comes to Oregon State from the University of Arizona where he started as the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance in July 2017 before being promoted to Senior Associate A.D. for Administration and Institutional Control in 2021. 

In that role, he led the departmentwide sports administration program and had oversight of team operations across all 22 sports to ensure the programs were supported at the highest levels from a financial, personnel and operational perspective. He also had sport supervision roles for Arizona’s men’s basketball, women’s soccer, and the men’s and women’s golf programs.

Blaylock was a member of Arizona Athletics’ leadership team and executive staff with additional responsibilities that included building and leading The Arizona EDGE program associated with student-athlete name, image, and likeness (NIL) and supporting the department’s initiatives associated with institutional control. He also served in a leadership capacity with game scheduling for multiple sports, the hiring of coaches, and the internal operations of the entire department.

In his role as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance at Arizona, Blaylock developed a program that successfully ensured the eligibility of high performing student-athletes. The program included elite student-athletes from baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and track and field. Most notably, the program included a national player of the year, a No. 1 overall draft pick, first round draft picks in baseball and men’s and women’s basketball, multiple conference players of the year, multiple future professional golfers, and multiple Olympic-level athletes, all of which never missed a competition due to an amateurism-related issue. The Compliance Office also secured a positive result on more than 95 percent of the NCAA legislative relief waivers associated with student-athletes under his leadership.

He also led the William M. “Bill” Clements Golf Center project that was completed last month.

Blaylock has experience on multiple committees including the NCAA Amateurism Fact-Finding Committee, the Pac-12 Legislative Committee, the Pac-12 Football Working Group, the University of Arizona Higher Learning Commission Accreditation Committee. He also served on the Arizona Athletics’ Sport Administration Team, Conduct Advisory Team, and Health and Wellness Team.

Before arriving in Tucson, Blaylock served as the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance at the University of Kansas from 2014 to 2017. At Kansas, he was responsible for rules education, governance, and the KU elite student-athlete program, while also serving as the primary contact for the men’s basketball and football programs.

Prior to his time at Kansas, Blaylock worked with the compliance staff at Temple University, as a scout for the Cleveland Browns (2013-14) and Montreal Alouettes (2014), marketing & media relations coordinator for Penske Racing (2012-13), assistant director of football operations at the University of Miami (2008-11), and in football operations for the Miami Dolphins (2007).

A native of Durham, North Carolina, Blaylock worked in the UNC football operations office while he earned a bachelor of arts in management from the University of North Carolina in 2005. He secured a master’s degree in sport management from the University of Texas in 2007 and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Arizona in 2023.

Blaylock and his wife, Kate, have one son, Jack.

This appointment is contingent on Blaylock’s satisfactorily completing customary background checks required by the university.
