CORVALLIS, Ore. – Head coach Laura Berg and the Oregon State softball program have added a pair of student-athletes ahead of the 2025 season: Sam Gutierrez and Maddy Weir.

Sam Gutierrez

C/UT • 5-4 • R/R

San Diego, Calif. (Eastern New Mexico/Newman (Kan.))

Making the move from a pair of Division II institutions – Eastern New Mexico and Newman (Kan.) – Gutierrez will look to bring a consistent strong bat and defensive presence. As both a part of the Greyhounds and Jets, respectively, Gutierrez had slugging percentages north of .421 and fielding percentages of around .980.

In her final season with Eastern New Mexico, logged a .379 mark at the plate with 58 hits – 17 doubles and 10 homers – with 45 RBI on the way to all-conference honors and all-region team appearances. The Californian had six games with at least three RBI, including games with six and five, respectively. A consistent bat for the Greyhounds, she had a 13-game hitting streak and a pair of fives in 2024.

With Newman, she tallied a .306 average from 72 hits which included 14 doubles, nine homers and drove in 46.

Making a splash in her first collegiate season, she turned in a .992 fielding percentage on 95 putouts and had just a single error. Just this past season, she had one of Eastern New Mexico’s best defensive showings with a .958 fielding percentage.

Maddy Weir

C/IF • 5-7 • R/R

Wayne, N.J. (Manhattan)

Weir will come to Corvallis from Manhattan with two years of eligibility after a pair of seasons with the Jaspers.

A big bat for Manhattan, Weir paced the Jaspers in home runs and doubles, while checking in at second in hits (40), slugging (.430) and total bases with 64 in her sophomore year. In the series finale against league foe Niagara, she turned in a 3-for-3 day with a trio of doubles, which set a career-high in the category.

In the field, she was just as strong, if not better. Completing 2024 with a .993 fielding percentage, she committed just a pair of errors to 249 putouts on 272 chances. In a road series against Canisius, tallied 24 putouts (10 each in the first two games) and was impeccable in the field. In the penultimate game of the season against Siena, she had a career day with 14 putouts.

A true student-athlete, Weir was selected to the MAAC’s All-Academic team. To receive the nod, each must have a 3.20 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
