EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel was announced on Tuesday as a finalist for both the Maxwell Award and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
Gabriel is joined by Boise State running back Boise State and Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter as finalists for the Maxwell Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding player.
Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward are the other two finalists with Gabriel for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious quarterback award.
The winners of both awards will be announced live on Thursday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
Gabriel is the fourth player in program history to be a Maxwell Award finalist, joining Bo Nix (2023), Marcus Mariota (2014) and Dennis Dixon (2007). Mariota became the first Duck to win the honor in 2014, on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy.
Gabriel joins Nix (2023), Mariota (2014), Dixon (2007) and Bill Musgrave (1989, 1990) as Ducks to be finalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. Mariota won the honor in 2014.
A sixth-year senior, Gabriel has been terrific in 2024 while leading the No. 1 ranked Ducks to an 11-0 start. He ranks second nationally with a 73.8 completion percentage while completing 259-of-351 passes for 3,066 yards and 22 touchdowns, and he has also rushed for six scores. His 278.7 passing yards per game rank 11th in the FBS and he is ninth in passer rating (164.42) and tied for 12th in total touchdowns (28).
Gabriel has made history this season, breaking the NCAA all-time record for total touchdowns with 180 in his career. He also ranks second all-time in career total yards (19,146), passing touchdowns (147) and passing yards (17.931), and his 60 career starts are just one shy of Nix for the FBS record for starts by a quarterback.
Gabriel and the Ducks will close the regular season with a rivalry showdown against Washington on Saturday in Autzen Stadium (4:30 p.m. PT, NBC). Oregon has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the 2024 Discover Big Ten Championships, set for Saturday, Dec. 7, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
