HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi was announced on Tuesday as one of 15 semifinallists for the 2024 Broyles Award, presented annually to college football’s top assistant coach.
Lupoi is one of 11 defensive coordinators to be named a semifinalist, and one of four assistants from the Big Ten.
Oregon has now had a semifinalist or better for the Broyles Award five times in program history, and each of the last three seasons under head coach Dan Lanning. Offensive coordinator Will Stein was a finalist for the honor in 2023, and former offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham was a semifinalist in 2022.
Lupoi has directed one of the top defensive units in all of college football this season for the top-ranked and undefeated Ducks. Oregon is seventh nationally in total defense (283.8 YPG), eighth in passing defense (171.5 YPG) and ninth in scoring defense (16.2 PPG), and the Ducks are one of six teams to hold nine or more opponents to 18 points or less.
The Ducks lead the Big Ten and are tied for sixth nationally in sacks (39), after tying the school single-game record with 10 sacks last week vs. Washington. Sophomore Matayo Uiagalelei led the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks during the regular season, and senior Jordan Burch is tied for fourth with 8.5 despite missing multiple games due to injury.
Lupoi and the Ducks will face off with Penn State this Saturday, Dec. 7, in the 2024 Discover Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis (5 p.m. PT, CBS).
