EUGENE, Ore. – On the heels of a record-breaking performance at Stanford, Diana Cherotich has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week as announced Wednesday by the league office. Cherotich is the Ducks’ first weekly outdoor honoree of the season.
Cherotich won the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational (April 4), running 31:45.22 to break the school record and become the No. 9 performer in collegiate history. With her effort, she also became the first UO woman to break 32 minutes in the event. Cherotich currently leads the Big Ten and ranks second in the NCAA.
The Bungoma County, Kenya, native eclipsed the previous Oregon standard of 32:06.64 set by Jordan Hasay in 2013. Cherotich led a 1-3 UO finish at Stanford with Juliet Cherubet in third at 32:02.78, also faster than the previous school record.
The Ducks’ season continues this week with the Bryan Clay Multis (April 10-11) in Azusa, Calif. Annika Williams, No. 3 in UO history with 5,832 points, will compete in her first heptathlon of the season. On the men’s side, the Ducks’ trio of Aiden Carter, Arthur Katahdin and Koby Kessler will take on the top section of the decathlon.
Competition begins Thursday at 2 p.m. with the decathlon 100 meters. The heptathlon starts at 3:30 p.m. with the 100-meter hurdles. All Oregon entries are competing in Group A of the heptathlon and decathlon. Click HERE for live results at the 2025 Bryan Clay Multis.
The Ducks’ next home meet is the Oregon Open (April 18-19) and Team Invitational (April 19). Tickets are currently on sale for that meet and rest of the home slate including the Big Ten Championships in May and NCAA Championships in June.
