CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team dropped their series opener to eighth-ranked Stanford on Friday afternoon, falling 8-0 in six frames.
Quick to get out in front, the Cardinal took charge with three first-inning runs to pressure the Beavers (16-21, 4-9 Pac-12) in front of a Kelly Field crowd.
Limited to just a hit off the bat of Madyson Clark in the sixth inning, OSU’s comeback attempt was thwarted after the Cardinal piled on five runs in the sixth inning. Savanah Whatley also found the basepaths for OSU, reaching by HBP and advanced to scoring position off a NiJaree Canady wild pitch.
Ellie Garcia (5-8) was charged with the loss after yielding all of the Cardinal runs off nine hits in 5.2 frames. Sarah Haendiges retired the sole batter she faced to close the sixth.
The series continues with the second game of the three-game set tomorrow. First pitch between the Beavs and Cardinal is slated for 2 p.m. and can be seen on the OSU Live Stream as well as Pac-12 Insider.
