Beavers’ Rally Falls Short Vs. Gonzaga

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Adley Rutschman hit his 15th home run of the season and Zack Zalesky drove in two in a ninth-inning rally but Oregon State dropped a 6-3 decision to Gonzaga Tuesday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Zalesky hit a two-run double in the ninth, and the Beavers (31-11-1 overall) later loaded the bases but Gonzaga’s Daniel Naughton got pinch hitter Greg Fuchs swinging at strike three to end the game.

Rutschman hit his 26th career home run in the fourth to put the Beavers on the board after a three-run top half of the inning by the Bulldogs. Gonzaga, however, pushed ahead further with two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Dylan Pearce made his first career start and retired the first nine batters he faced. He, however, got into a jam in the fourth, and Gonzaga’s Troy Johnston hit a two-run home run in the inning to put the Bulldogs up 3-0. Pearce, who was charged with the loss to drop to 1-2, was relieved by Andrew Walling after throwing 36 pitches.

Nick Trogrlic-Iverson worked five innings for the Bulldogs (24-17), and held the Beavers to two hits and a run. He picked up the win to improve to 2-2 this season.
