FULLERTON, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team put the finishing touches on an unblemished, 5-0 weekend in Fullerton at the 2024 Judi Garman Classic on Sunday with a pair of wins. Oregon State (11-10) took down Weber State (3-1) and Cal State Fullerton (2-0) to seal the perfect weekend.
Game 1: Oregon State 3, Weber State 1
A three-run home run in the fifth inning by Lici Campbell secured the fourth win of the weekend in as many tries as Oregon State beat Weber State by a 3-1 line on Sunday morning.
The bulk of the OSU offense came in the fifth frame when three consecutive Beavs reached base. Campbell cleared them with her homer that drove in Savanah Whatley and Kiki Escobar to make it 3-0. Weber State cut into the lead in the ensuing inning with a solo home run of their own.
Sarah Haendiges pitched 6.0+ innings, leaving in the seventh, after striking out eight, allowing the run, walking two and yielding three hits. The eight punchouts marked a season-best and just one shy of matching her career-high, set back in 2022. Ellie Garcia closed the game, retiring the Wildcats’ final three – two by strikeout.
Game 2: Oregon State 2, Cal State Fullerton 0
Two one-run innings were what the Beavers needed to put away Cal State Fullerton in the weekend finale by a 2-0 score.
Charity Sevaaetasi’s first inning double to center brought home Gottlieb to plate the game’s first run early on and claim early momentum. Oregon State threatened many times over including two frames later when Messmer knocked Gottlieb to third off her double before the side retiring.
Oregon State doubled the lead in the penultimate inning when early chances led to runners in scoring position without anyone retired. Maddy Clark lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Kaylee Oh to cross home for the 2-0 lead.
In their sixth, Fullerton wouldn’t go away easily as they threatened after two quick outs. An inning later, the Titans went down in order to secure the win and the five-game winning streak.
Gottlieb and Sevaaetasi each had a pair of hits, including Sevaaetasi’s RBI two-bagger to open the scoring.
Ellie Garcia picked up another complete game to make her 4-3 on the season after 7.0 clean frames. The Californian fanned three, walked three and allowed four Titan hits.
Home is calling as Oregon State will compete at Kelly Field for the first time of 2024 this Friday. Arizona will visit for the first Pac-12 series, with game one slated for March 8 at 1 p.m.
