Beavers Top Aztecs to Start Pac-12 Play 2-0

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men’s soccer overcame a first-half deficit to take down San Diego State 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field.

Sofiane Djeffal tallied his third goal of the season, as well as his fifth assist in the winning effort. Steffen Yeates netted the game-winner, his first career goal in an Oregon State uniform.

With the win, the Beavers (5-3-0, 2-0-0 Pac-12) have now won eight consecutive Pac-12 home matches, in a streak that dates back to 2017.

As a team, Oregon State held a 14-7 advantage on shots over San Diego State (2-4-1, 0-2-0), and controlled 68 percent of the possession.

Gloire Amanda created the first chance of the match, when his shot was blocked from 12 yards out. Amanda nearly got on the end of a cross minutes later, when Joel Walker whipped a ball into the box that sailed just over the forward’s head.

Walker came within inches of the opener in the 27th, when Alex Cover played him beyond the SDSU back line, but Walker’s low effort was just outside the post. Eric Diaz followed that up with a shot in the 31st, but the Aztec defender moved quickly to get in the way of the attempt.

San Diego State grabbed a goal just before the half to take a 1-0 advantage into the break.

Just minutes later the Aztecs were reduced to 10 men by a red card. The Beavers wasted little time capitalizing. Djeffal whipped the ensuing free kick into the box. Cover headed the ball back to Yeates, who hammered it in to the back of the net.

Armas nearly got a goal of his own in the 65th, when his shot from distance narrowly cleared the left post.
