Bennett Tallies 14 Kills, Beavers Fall to No. 24 Cougars in Four

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Haylie Bennett was on fire early for the Oregon State volleyball helping the Beavers to take the first set, but ultimately No. 24 Washington State was too much stealing the match in four sets.

The loss drops the Beavers to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in Pac-12 play, while Washington State improved to 20-5, 9-4. Set scores were 25-18, 20-25, 15-25 and 16-25.

“It was disappointing to play so well in the first set and then to completely fall apart,” head coach Mark Barnard said. “Our attack efficiency dropped dramatically with neither our setting nor attacking playing well. Once we got hesitant it just got worse. We certainly have work to do before we play again on Sunday.”

Oregon State opened an early lead at 7-4 as Bennett got off to a hot start with four early kills. The Cougars fought back with three in a row to tie the score at 11, but the Beavers answered with a 3-0 run of their own to go up 14-11. Another three-point run put OSU up 18-13 and the Beavers didn’t look back taking the set, 25-18. Bennett registered seven kills and Amy Underdown added four in the set as OSU hit at an impeccable .452 (17 kills, 3 errors, 31 attacks) attack rate.

The Beavers got down 3-0 quickly in the second set but used a 5-0 run spurred by a Bennett kill and back-to-back aces by Underdown to pull within 12-11. OSU continued the press with a 4-0 burst as Chloe Brown registered consecutive kills and Bennett and Kory Cheshire combined for a block to take the lead at 15-13. WSU used a 7-0 run benefiting from four straight OSU attack errors to take a 22-17 lead. Though Cheshire registered a kill followed by an ace, OSU couldn’t overcome the deficit dropping the set, 25-20, to tie the match at the intermission.

Lindsey Schell and Brown recorded kills to open the third set and a 3-0 flurry shortly after powered by a pair of Underdown kills put the Beavers ahead 8-5. But again, the Cougars pushed back with four in a row to regain the lead at 9-8. The teams swapped sideouts until WSU moved out on a 9-1 stretch to make the score 20-12. The lead proved too much with WSU taking the set, 25-15, and going up in the match.

Washington State used a 10-1 burst early in the fourth set to take the lead at 13-7. The Beavers made a couple small moves midway through the set but could never mount a sustained rally dropping the fourth set, 25-16.

Game Notes: Haylie Bennett tallied a team-high 14 kills and Chloe Brown added 10 to lead the OSU offense … Montanna Gubrud registered her second career 40 assist match … Grace Massey anchored the back row defense with a team-best 17 digs, while Brown added 10 to notch her third career double-double … Kory Cheshire recorded a five blocks and Bennett added four.
