Ducks in Lead Pack at Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. – Owen Avrit continued his strong early-season play while both Jose Islas and Greg Solhaug impressed in their season debuts and Oregon stood in third following the first two rounds of the Husky Invitational played Monday at the 7,115-yard, par-17 Gold Mountain Olympic Course.

The Ducks had a two-round total of 9-under 567. Host Washington led the tournament at 23-under 553, while Boise State was one stroke ahead of Oregon in second at 566. Oregon State was fourth at 569.

Avrit was tied for 11th at 4-under 140, while Islas and Solhaug were tied for 18th at 2-under 142.

The Ducks had their best round of the day in the morning with a 6-under 282. Islas led the way with a 68, while Avrit carded a 70 and Solhaug, Tom Gueant and Yuki Moriyama all shot even-par 72s.

Scores were higher across the board Monday afternoon, though Avrit bucked the trend with his second consecutive 70. The junior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., had seven birdies and three bogeys Monday.

Solhaug also turned in a 70 while Gueant had his second straight 72. Gueant was tied for 32nd at even par.

Meanwhile at the Husky Individual Invitational, being played simultaneously at the Gold Mountain Cascade Course, freshman Greyson Leach fired back-to-back rounds of 68 to hold the overnight lead at 8-under 136. Leach opened his day with four birdies and 14 pars in the first round and then rolled in seven birdies with three bogeys in the second round.

He has a one-shot lead over Aiden O’Hagan of Washington and was three strokes up on teammate Nate Stember, who was in sixth at 5-under 139 following rounds of 69-70. Senior Craig Ronne and freshman Eric Doyle were tied for 11th at 2-under 142.

Dating back to last season, 8 of Avrit’s last 12 rounds have been 70 or better, including all five rounds so far in the 2021-22 season … Islas carded seven birdies, to go along with three bogeys, in his first round as a Duck … Gueant recovered from a triple-bogey early in the second round to claw his way back to level par … Doyle had the Ducks’ only eagle of the day with a first-round three on the par-5 fifth hole on the Cascade Course.
