SAN FRANCISCO – Despite difficult weather conditions the No. 24 Oregon men’s golf team saw a three-stroke improvement in round two of The Goodwin, paced by a second-straight 71 by senior Greg Solhaug on Friday at TPC Harding Park.
Oregon shot a 7-over 297 on the day, bringing their tournament total to 17 over (577) and moving them three spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 12th. After leading UO with a 1 over performance in round one, Solhaug displayed consistency in doing it again on Friday. At 2 over overall, the senior sits in a tie for 27th entering Saturday’s final round. Three Ducks shot 2 over in the second round including Owen Avrit and Aiden Krafft who are both 5 over for the tournament.
“We did some good things today,” head coach Casey Martin said. “The conditions were wet and windy which was very difficult and made scores higher. We still had too many mistakes but we’ll keep battling until we get that corrected.”
How It Happened
The Ducks teed off the day on hole 10, and after a bogey on 12 Solhaug responded with birdies on 15 and 17 to go 1 under through nine. Another birdie on par-five hole four had Solhaug sitting at two under, but three bogeys in his final four holes brought him back above par at the end of the round.
Avrit fired two birdies on both the front and back nine, but a double bogey on hole two brought his score to 2 over for the day. Krafft birdied his first hole of the day, but three bogeys through his first nine holes put him back above par. He combated two bogey with a pair of birdies on the back half of his round and set his course for a 2-over finish. Avrit and Krafft finished the day in a tie 53rd on the leaderboard.
After a difficult first round on Thursday, Greyson Leach bounced back to shoot 2 over in the second. Leach fired a birdie on holes four and 10, and at the conclusion of the round the junior sits in a tie for 77th at 7 over. Also at 7 over is Stember, who birdied his first hole of the day but finished the round 4 over.
