SEATTLE – The Oregon State softball team capped nonconference play with a 5-3 win at Seattle U on Wednesday evening to start a four-game trip in the Emerald City.
The Beavers (15-16) struck early for all five runs, plating them all in the game’s first three frames.
Madyson Clark kickstarted the Beaver offense with a two-out single and was moved up quickly with a Grace Messmer walk in the top of the first before Eliana Gottlieb knocked a double to dead center which brought both of them home for the early 2-0 lead.
Seattle U responded in their half of the first with a run after their first two reached safely.
The Beavers answered back in the second when Kiki Escobar dropped a single into shallow left to bring home Madi Simon for the 3-1 advantage. Like in the first, the Redhawks answered back with a run in their ensuing inning.
Facing another two-out situation in the top of the third, Abby Doerr roped a double to the warning track in left to push the OSU lead to 5-2 as she drove in her sister, Paige, and Simon before the Redhawks plated another in the bottom half to make it 5-3.
Gottlieb paced the Beaver offense with a pair of both hits and RBI while four other Beavs added a hit and Abby Doerr also drove in two runs.
Logan Hulon threw the game’s first 3.0 frames, where she surrendered all three Redhawk runs on six hits and a pair of walks. The Dripping Springs, Texas, product struck out four. Pitching the final four in relief, Ellie Garcia (5-5) picked up the win after just allowing two hits, tallied three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Oregon State will resume Pac-12 play across the city by starting a three-game set against eighth-ranked Washington on Montlake. The series will get underway from the Husky Softball Stadium at 6 p.m. and can be seen on UW’s Live Stream.
