Emeralds Win Game 1 Against Everett

By: Jacob Archer

The Emeralds started off their 6-game road trip with a 6-3 victory over the Everett Aquasox. It was a great team effort as they rallied for 6 unanswered runs after allowing 3 runs in the 1st inning.

Seth Lonsway was on the mound for the Emeralds tonight. He had a rough go-around to start the game, as he allowed 4 straight base hits and 3 runs to start the 1st inning. But after the tough start, Lonsway was absolutely lights out and didn’t allow another base hit the rest of the way. He ended the night with 7 strikeouts and just 2 walks.

The Emeralds offense came to life in the 4th inning after Matt Higgins hit a 2-out single that just missed being a homerun by a matter of inches. But it didn’t matter as the next batter, Zach Morgan, belted a 2-run shot to cut the deficit to just 1-run.

In the 6th inning the Emeralds were able to tie up the game after Zach Morgan once again delivered a 2-out base hit. He ripped a double off of the right field wall and Scott Bandura came home to score on the play. It was a great night at the plate for Morgan who ended the night with 3 RBI’s.

The Emeralds were able to take the lead in the top of the 8th inning. Scott Bandura started the inning with a hit by pitch and he was able to advance to 2nd base on a passed ball. The next batter, Jack Payton, ripped a double to score Bandura and give the Ems a one run lead. Matt Higgins then layed down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to third and he came home to score on a fielder’s choice by Zach Morgan.

In the 9th inning the Ems added a final run of insurance after Turner Hill started the inning off with a lead off triple. He eventually came home to score on a passed ball for the 6th and final run of the evening for the Emeralds.

While it was a great offensive performance from the Emeralds, it was a hat-tip performance as well from the pitching staff. After allowing four hits to start the game, the Ems allowed a grand total of 1 more hit the rest of the game. Nick Morreale pitched the 6th and 7th inning and allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3 batters and allowing 0 runs. He earned his first victory of the season.

Ben Madison came in and pitched a flawless 8th and 9th inning en route to his first save of the year. He didn’t allow a single base runner and he struck out 4.

The Ems now move to 3-1 on the season and pick up a win on their first road game of the year. They’ll be back in action tomorrow night at Everett with first pitch slated for 7:05 P.M.
