EUGENE – The atmosphere was electric with 2,704 fans at PK Park, but the Eugene Emeralds (54-39) missed out on an opportunity to pull even with the Everett AquaSox (55-36) in the High-A West standings on Thursday night, falling to the Frogs by a final of 6-4.
For the third consecutive day, Everett opened the scoring by striking in the first inning.
Conner Hoover collected the first hit of the day by doubling to left field, and after a passed ball by Eugene catcher Robert Emery advanced Hoover to third, Cade Marlowe brought him home with a single to center that put the Frogs up first, 1-0. Later in the inning, Dariel Gomez made it 2-0 by lining a 2-2, two-out pitch into the right-center field gap to score Marlowe and put the visitors up by a pair heading to the bottom of the first.
Three innings later, Everett added to their lead with another pair of runs, the first coming on a Dariel Gomez triple that was laced over the first base bag and into the right field corner to score Cade Marlowe, and the second coming on a Tyler Keenan single to left that brought Gomez home from third to see the Frogs take a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
In that bottom half, the Emeralds offense was heard from for the first time of the night, starting with a Jairo Pomares opposite field blast for what was his first homer in just his third game with the Emeralds, a solo shot that cut Everett’s lead right back to three.
One pitch later, the AquaSox lead shrunk back down to two when Ricardo Genovés lifted off to center field for his second homer in as many games and his sixth round-tripper of the season, going back-to-back with Pomares on consecutive pitches to trim Everett’s lead down to 4-2 after five innings.
Everett wasted no time ballooning their lead back up to four, though, as they plated a pair of runs in the fifth thanks to a Jake Anchia RBI single and later back-to-back passed balls by Ems catcher Robert Emery that allowed Conner Hoover to advance from second to third and then from third to home.
One inning later, the spree of two-run innings continued as Eugene cut it back to a two-run game thanks to a two-run blast from Sean Roby, a no-doubter off the bat that travelled an estimated 447 feet for his sixth homer in the month of August, and Everett took a 6-4 lead into the seventh.
However, the Emeralds could creep no further as the offense went cold the rest of the way as the Frogs snapped their four-game losing streak while snapping Eugene’s four-game winning streak in the process behind a 6-4 victory.
The Eugene Emeralds and Everett AquaSox face off again tonight with a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at PK Park.
