SCOTTSDALE – Oregon counted three rounds in the 60s Sunday to finish eighth at the season-opening Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Owen Avrit shot a career-best 6-under 64, Yuki Moriyama had a 66 and Tom Gueant carded a 67 as the Ducks were 13 strokes under in the final round (267). That came after Saturday’s 14-under 266 as the Ducks were 27-under the last two days of the tournament at Mirabel Golf Club.
“Really encouraged by our last two rounds,” said head coach Casey Martin. “Happy for Owen. He had a terrific tournament, but everyone really competed and contributed the last two days and that’s what we’re looking for.”
The Ducks shot rounds of 287-266-267 for a 20-under 820 total. That was the third-lowest score in program history.
Led by Avrit, every Oregon golfer was at or below par on Sunday. Avrit posted his second-best finish as a Duck, tying for 12th at 10-under 200, while his round of 64 was a personal best.
Craig Ronne also had a solid opening tournament, tying for 24th at 5-under 205. Freshman Eric Doyle tied for 46th at 1-under 209 in his Oregon debut. Both golfers finished with an even-par 70 on Sunday.
The only two times a Duck golf team has shot below 220 was an 811 at the 2011 Alister MacKenzie Invitational and an 819 at the 2014 Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic … Dating back to last season, six of Avrit’s last 10 rounds have been 70 or better, including all three rounds at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
