NAMPA, Idaho – Grant Willits and Cory Crooks each picked up pins and Brandon Kaylor came away with a top-five win to pace Oregon State wrestling to a 31-6 victory over Utah Valley Sunday at Columbia High School.
The Beavers never trailed in the dual and Kaylor’s victory over No. 5 Taylor LaMont at 125 pounds was one off three ranked wins for OSU. No. 16 Devan Turner defeated No. 15 Haiden Drury, 5-3, at 133 pounds to start the match. He then watched as No. 26 Mateo Olmos won 5-3 over No. 32 Kekana Fourt at 174.
Willits won his team-leading 15th match of the season, and did so in 4:32 over Ty Smith at 141. Willits has now won six matches via pins this season, and 16 in his career.
Crooks made it back-to-back falls for OSU at 149. He downed Sam Ededlblute in 6:44 to improve to 7-5 this season. It marked his first pin of the year.
Hunter Willits (157) made it four consecutive victories to start the match for the Beavers. He was a 6-0 victor over Jaxon Garouette.
Trey Munoz improved to 10-2 this season – and 5-2 this week – with a 13-4 major decision over Hunter Morse at 184. Gary Traub then made OSU’s lead 28-6 with an 8-1 win over heavyweight Chase Trussell.
Kaylor then capped the afternoon with a 5-3 win over LaMont for the Beavers’ final 31-6 victory. The win marked the third of the season via a ranked wrestler for the No. 15 Kaylor. It was also his second over a top-10 competitor, following a 5-3 win over Ohio State’s No. 9 Malik Heinselman on Dec. 3.
