#OregonBaseball: Zavala Named Golden Spikes Semifinalist, 2021 All-Eugene Team Announced

EUGENE – While the season is now officially over for the Oregon Ducks, the baseball team had several make the All-Eugene Regional Team.

USA Baseball released its 2021 Golden Spikes Award semifinalists and Oregon right fielder Aaron Zavala is one of 25 players in the running for the honor.

Head Coach Mark Wasikowski will be on the James Crepea Show this afternoon to talk about the season that saw future Major League Baseball stars Kenyon Yovan and Zavala lead the team through exciting finishes including last night’s regional loss.

The Golden Spikes Award honors the top amateur baseball player in the nation and is given each year to the player who best exhibits exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

Zavala, who was named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year and a Collegiate Baseball second-team All-American last week, ended the season batting .392 with nine home runs, 38 RBI and 64 runs scored, while boasting a .525 on-base percentage and a .626 slugging percentage. He led the Ducks in batting average, runs, hits (78), slugging percentage, walks (50) and stolen bases (11). He set school records for both runs scored and walks.

Nationally after the regular season ended, the Keizer, Ore., native ranked second in the nation in OBP (.001 behind the national leader), seventh in base on balls, ninth in base on balls per game (0.96) and 18th in batting average. He led the Pac-12 Conference in on-base percentage, walks and base on balls per game, while ranking second in batting average, sixth in hits per game and seventh in slugging percentage and hits. Zavala is also a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, which is given to the college baseball player of the year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He ended the season being named to the Eugene Regional All-Tournament Team batting .333 (6-for-18) with two home runs, four RBI and six runs scored.

Zavala is the fifth Duck to earn Golden Spikes semifinalist awards, joining David Peterson (2017), Jimmie Sherfy (2013), Alex Keudell (2012) and Tyler Anderson (2011). He is the first Ducks’ position player to be named a semifinalist.

LSU advances to face No. 3 Tennessee in the NCAA Super Regional round.

Zavala was also one of several Ducks named to the All-Eugene Regional Team.
