EUGENE – For a second time this season, the Oregon track and field team has garnered national accolades with Tuesday’s announcement of Cooper Teare as the USTFCCCA Division I Men’s Athlete of the Week.
Teare smashed the collegiate record in the mile, stopping the clock in 3:50.39 at the Tyson Invitational (Feb. 12). He shaved 1.62 seconds off the previous record of 3:52.01 held by former UO standout Edward Cheserek during the 2017 season. With his blazing performance, Teare became the seventh-fastest performer in world history in the indoor mile and split 3:35.46 for 1,500 meters, which is good for an Olympic Trials qualifier.
Along with Teare, that raced produced the No. 1, 2 and 6 mile performances in NCAA history and the top-three times in the country this year. Teammates Cole Hocker and Charlie Hunter ran 3:50.55 and 3:53.49, respectively. Later that weekend, freshman Evan Holland ran 3:59.95 to become the fifth Oregon runner under four minutes this season; Reed Brown ran a personal-best 3:56.61 at the Razorback Invitational in January.
Less than 24 hours after the historic mile effort, Teare posted a top of 1:49.29 in his first collegiate 800 meters. Individually, Teare currently owns NCAA-leading marks in the mile and 3,000 meters (7:46.10). He was also part of the record-breaking DMR with Hocker, Hunter and Luis Peralta that recorded a time of 9:19.42 at the Razorback Invitational (Jan. 29).
In Monday’s release of the national rankings, the Men of Oregon maintained its No. 1 spot for a third-consecutive week while the Women of Oregon moved up six spots to a season-high No. 9 ranking.
