EUGENE — A day after sweeping a pair of Pac-12 weekly honors, Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux has been named the Bednarik Award National Player of the Week.
Playing his first full game of the season, Thibodeaux was a dominant force for the Ducks in last Saturday’s 34-31 win at UCLA with a career-high nine tackles (eight solo) and 4.5 tackles for loss, including two sacks and a forced fumble.
Thibodeaux is the third Oregon defender to earn national player of the week honors this season. Verone McKinley III was the Bronko Nagurski National Player of the Week following Oregon’s win at Ohio State, and Bennett Williams was the Walter Camp National FBS Player of the Week and the Jim Thorpe Player of the Week after the Ducks’ win over Stony Brook.
The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 to the college defensive player of the year. Thibodeaux was on the preseason watch list for the honor for the second year in a row.
