EUGENE – Closing out an incredible home weekend at Hayward Field, the Oregon track and field team recorded five wins and four top-10 program marks Saturday on day two of the Hayward Premiere. NCAA indoor champions Cole Hocker and Emmanuel Ihemeje were part of the Ducks’ winner’s circle along with Iman Brown (200m), Jaida Ross (shot put) and Kiana Phelps (discus).
“It was a great day to be a Duck,” head coach Robert Johnson said following the meet. “The weather gods held up for us and it was an absolutely glorious day. We couldn’t ask for a better day this early in the month of April. Lots of wins for the Men and Women of Oregon and lots of top 10s on our UO record lists with a bunch of PRs. Like I’ve said, those are things we celebrate here: doing better than you’ve ever done.”
A day removed from a victory in the invitational section of the 1,500 meters, Hocker collected his second win of the weekend with a 1:46.60 performance in the 800 meters. Sitting in fourth place with 100 meters to go, Hocker put in a final kick down lane one as the field swung wide. Based on times entering the weekend, Hocker’s effort is No. 1 in the NCAA and now ranks seventh on the all-time UO list.
“I’m really happy with pretty much the same feeling as yesterday with how I was able to run with the point we are in training,” Hocker said. “Having speed at this point so early in the season gives me a lot of confidence in what I’m able to do at the end of races especially when I’m in peak shape.”
Hocker and Luis Peralta—third in 1:47.55—were two of four UO men to dip below 1:50 on Saturday. In the heats earlier in the program, Cooper Teare and Reed Brown posted times of 1:48.99 and 1:49.95, respectively. Peralta moves to 10th in program history with his showing Saturday.
The Ducks’ first winner of the day was Phelps in the discus with a day’s best of 51.94m/170-5 in the fourth round. She also posted a runner-up finish in the shot put behind Ross who became the newest member of the Oregon top-10 club. Ross won the competition in 15.53m/50-11.5 which makes her the No. 8 performer in UO history in the event.
“It’s insane, just being in the middle of Hayward (Field) and feeling everyone’s energy just gravitating toward the middle,” Ross said. “It’s great. It got me on my toes pretty quickly so my first three throws weren’t the best but eventually I just picked up and went with it. But it feels amazing.”
In his first outing since winning the NCAA indoor title, Ihemeje won the triple jump on Saturday with a short-approach mark of 15.87m/52-0.75 which sits at No. 6 on the all-time UO performance list.
Iman Brown led a 1-2-3 finish for the Women of Oregon in the 200 meters, stopping the clock in 23.79 to post the team’s final win of the day. She was followed by teammates Gabby Beauvais (24.13) and Megan Bolton (24.26). Earlier in the day, Brown had a second-place finish in the 100 meters.
Along with their winning efforts, the Ducks racked up 13 personal bests and nine runner-up finishes.
