TEMPE, Ariz. – First inning offense wasn’t enough for the Oregon State softball team as they dropped the opener of the ASU/GCU Invitational to Arizona State, 9-2, on Thursday night.

Oregon State (6-9) quickly got the bats going with Jada Lewis and Morgan Howey reaching to open the game. Jaeya Butler, with two outs, slugged a double to get Lewis and Howey home for the early 2-0 lead.

The Sun Devils – held off the board through the game’s first three – tied it at 2 after four before using seven an inning later to put the difference at seven. Arizona State scattered nine hits off the Beaver arms, Ellie Garcia and Elizabeth Phillips.

Lewis led the Oregon State offense by going 2-for-2 while a trio – Butler, Nicole Donahue and Howey – each added a hit. With the first inning single, Howey extended her season-best five-game hitting streak.

Garcia (3-3) got charged with the loss following five runs – all earned – given up and eight hits in 4.0 thrown. Phillips made her second appearance of the season when she entered in relief in the fifth. The freshman from Colorado threw the last 2.0, gave up four runs on four hits and walked a pair.

Oregon State will continue play in the ASU/GCU Invitational with a game against Utah State tomorrow. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. PT from Grand Canyon.
