OSU SB: Ducks Take Sunday Showdown

EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team dropped the finale of the Rivalry Series, 8-3, to 22nd-ranked Oregon on Sunday afternoon.

Plating their runs early for the second time in the series, the Ducks used a trio of home home runs to build a 5-0 lead by the third inning. The Beavers (18-25, 6-12 Pac-12) cut into the deficit with three just a frame later.

In the top of the third, the Beavers piled four hits – including two to lead it off – as they plated three. With Madi Simon, Kaylee Oh – pinch running after Lici Campbell’s single –  and Paige Doerr aboard and in scoring position, Charity Sevaaetasi drove home Oh. On the ensuing at-bat, Savanah Whatley cut the lead in half with a double to the warning track and drove home Kiki Escobar and Doerr.

Oregon responded in their fourth with three to push their lead back to five runs.

Seven Beavers – Campbell, Abby Doerr, Eliana Gottlieb, Grace Messmer, Simon, Sevaaetasi and Whatley contributed a hit toward the offensive effort on the afternoon. Whatley’s two runs batted in paced OSU while Sevaaetasi added one.

Logan Hulon (5-10) – charged with the loss – tossed the contest’s first 3.0 frames, gave up all five of the Ducks’ runs on six hits and a pair of walks but fanned a pair. Throwing 0.1 innings, Ellie Garcia surrendered three runs on four hits. Sarah Haendiges threw the remaining 2.2, where she fanned three and gave up three hits and a walk.

Oregon State will return home to Kelly Field to close out the home slate with a three-game set with Utah. Friday’s game is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on Pac-12 Mountain.
