CORVALLIS, Ore. – Venturing out of the contiguous United States for the first time since 2015, the Oregon State volleyball team will take part in the Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu this week. In the Aloha State, the Beavers will face Texas State and hosts Hawaii. Numbers to Know1 – Oregon State and Texas State will meet for the first time this week.2 – The Beavers are second in the WCC in service aces with 22, Lauren Rumel’s 8 leads the team.3- Three freshmen – Emma Lilo (31), Yasemin Narlioğlu (59) and Alondra Paz (18) – have double-digit digs.3- OSU will play in its third time zone in three weeks. Previously, the Beavs played in Mountain (MST) and Pacific.3- Rumel sits third in the WCC for kills-per-set with 3.95.48 – Lilo had 48 assists in the season opener – which is the single-match best in the Behonick era. The Week’s Opposition• Oregon State and Texas State have never met before.• For the second time in three weeks, the Beavers will face a new opponent.• Oregon State is making their fourth trip to the Aloha State and will meet Hawaii for the seventh time. OSU and Hawaii first met in 1984 and last faced off in 2015.• Against Oregon State, Hawaii holds a 5-1 lead in the series.• Every meeting with the Rainbow Wahine has been in Honolulu. Looking Back at Last Week• OSU dropped a pair at the Roadrunner Classic, losing to Nevada and the hosts, CSU Bakersfield.Aloha State to Beaver State• For the first time since the 2019 season, the Beavers will have at least one from the state of Hawaii.• The 2024 squad has two, both of which are in the freshman class: Lilo (Kailua) and Rodriguez (Mililani).• This marks the longest trip in the Behonick era, surpassing Tucson, Ariz. (1,382 miles away). Youth Movement• A pair of freshmen – Emma Lilo and Yasemin Narlioğlu – followed up their debut weekends with strong ones in week two.• Lilo registered 68 assists – 8.5 per set – in the two matches played. On the season, she’s accumulated 175 or 8.75 per set.• Lilo’s 175 rank third in the WCC.• Narlioğlu tallied 29 digs and dished out eight assists in the eight sets played. Back to the Willamette Valley• Following this trip to Hawaii, the next five matches will all take place in the Willamette Valley.• Next week, the Beavers will welcome Washington (9/17) and Portland State (9/20) for the first home matches of 2024.• After meeting UW and PSU, the Rivalry Series resumes in Eugene (9/22) before Pepperdine visits Gill Coliseum (9/26) and closing the stretch two days later at Portland against the Pilots. Aces Wild• There is no shortage of orange and black atop the league’s service ace leaders.• Rumel’s 8 places her fifth while a trio of Beavs – Light, Lilo and Narlioğlu – each have 7. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work• Making an impact from the jump, Lilo has been a vital cog in the Beavers’ attack.• Her 175 kills not only leads Oregon State but is good for third in the WCC after two weeks of play. Killing It• A pair of Beavers sit in the WCC’s top-6 in kills so far this season• Lauren Rumel’s 79 kills is good for fourth and in sixth is Annika Hester with 64.• OSU is one of just two schools with two in the top-6 of the stat. League Honors• Oregon State’s pair of preseason WCC-honored student-athletes were Hester and Rumel• The Beavers were picked to finish fourth in the conference by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll.• The fourth-place selection is the highest for the Beavers in the Behonick era.The World to Corvallis• For the second consecutive year in the Behonick era, the Beavers will have three international student-athletes.• OSU has a pair from Turkey – Doğanyüz and Narlioğlu – along with Coba (Italy).• Oregon State is one of five WCC schools with at least three international student-athletes.
