SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State freshman Cooper Hjerpe has been named the Pac-12’s Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Hjerpe is coming off a seven-inning effort versus then-No. 7 Arizona on Saturday. He struck out a career-best 11 batters and held the Wildcats – who came into the game with a .331 batting average – to two hits and a run. Arizona’s lone run scored came on an attempted double steal in the sixth inning. That inning also happened to be the only time Hjerpe, a Capay, Calif., native, allowed the Wildcats to put a runner in scoring position.

Hjerpe retired the side in four of his seven innings and never faced more than four batters in a frame.

The win marked Hjerpe’s third of the season. He also upped his season strikeout total to 84, which comes into Oregon State’s series with Stanford ranked third in the Pac-12.

The honor is the first of Hjerpe’s career and the third recognition for an OSU pitcher this season, following Kevin Abel on March 2 and March 30. Oregon State has now had 97 all-time conference Pitcher of the Week honors, which leads the Pac-12.

Oregon State closes out the regular season with a three-game series at Stanford that starts Thursday night at 6 p.m.
