TUCSON, Ariz. – The Oregon State softball team beat Brigham Young, 10-3, to open the weekend at the Wildcat Invitational, Friday afternoon.
The Beavers were led by a standout showing from Mariah Mazon. The junior pitcher notched seven strikeouts, while walking none, against the Cougars. Not only did Mazon stand out on the mound, but she hit the only home run of the game, earning Oregon State’s final two runs.
Starting off slow for both teams, the field saw two hits total in the first three innings – one Cougar single and one Beaver single from freshman Grace Messmer. The first inning saw three-straight outs from both Oregon State and Brigham Young. OSU and BYU saw three-straight outs for the second time in the third and second innings, respectively.
The Beavers opened the scoring in the fourth inning. Freshman Madison Simon drew a walk before advancing to second. Mazon reached first on an error, and continued to second, as Simon went for the run, giving Oregon State a 1-0 advantage. Junior Missy Nunes notched an RBI with a single for the second run.
The Cougars answered with a home run from their first batter of the fourth. A fielding error by Messmer led to two runs to give BYU the 3-2 lead.
The fifth inning proved to be the most successful inning for Oregon State. Messmer opened with an out at first but freshmen Ivana Perez and Xiao Gin followed with a single each. Perez hit home with a single from freshman Charity Sevaaetasi before Mazon hit a double for another RBI.
Sophomore Frankie Hammoude added a double to the lineup for two RBIs before Messmer earned her second at-bat of the inning, garnering a double and making the score 8-3.

Oregon State will return tomorrow (Feb. 27) with two games against Seattle (8 a.m. PT) and No. 3 Arizona (11 a.m. PT) before closing the weekend against Colorado State on Sunday.
