#Pac12Softball: Oregon State’s Mazon Leads Weekly Awards

SAN FRANCISCO – Playing one of the best series of her career, Oregon State softball’s Mariah Mazon was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday afternoon.

“I’m so proud of Mariah,” Beaver’s head coach Laura Berg said. “She has so much grit and competed her heart out against the Ducks.”

Mazon had an excellent weekend, both in the circle and at the plate. In the batter’s box, she totaled eight hits in 14 at bats for a .571 batting average, leading the team over the weekend.

The Beavers’ hitting started slow on Thursday, but Mazon started right away hitting for two of the team’s total three hits in game one. Playing a complete game in the circle, she kept the Ducks to just two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in the first game of the series.

During Friday’s doubleheader, Mazon did not slow down. For OSU’s game one win, she batted in three runs on three hits while pitching her second complete game of the weekend. Her seven strikeouts kept the Ducks held at two hits and just one run as OSU beat No. 3 Oregon in their second conference game, for the Ducks’ second loss on the season.

In the final game of the series, Mazon saw her third game of the series in the circle for five strikeouts, allowing eight hits and keeping the Ducks to four runs. In the batter’s box, she tallied two hits including a double.

Mazon’s award is the first of the season for the Beavers. Mazon earned the last Pac-12 weekly award after being named Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 18, 2020. A Beaver was last named Pac-12 Player of the Week after the first weekend of play in 2019 (Feb. 12) when Missy Nunes was honored.

This is Mazon’s first Player of the Week award, and third weekly award from the conference, in her career.

Mazon, along with the rest of the Oregon State softball team, will continue their conference schedule this weekend against Washington.
