Portland Timbers Take Down Real Salt Lake 6-1

Portland records largest margin victory in club history and matches team record for most goals scored

PORTLAND– The Portland Timbers earned a 6-1 victory against Real Salt Lake at Providence Park on Saturday night.

The Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to six games and matched the largest margin of victory in club history and was Portland’s fifth in the last six matches (5-0-1), scoring a total of 15 goals in that stretch.

The Timbers improved to 12-10-4 overall and 8-3-2 at Providence Park, tied for the most home wins in the Western Conference. Portland continued to climb in the standings to currently claim fourth place with 40 points.

The Timbers matched the club’s largest margin of victory tonight at five goals, last happening Sept. 19, 2020 at San Jose. The victory also marked the most goals scored in a game since Portland’s 6-3 victory against LA Galaxy on Oct. 7, 2020. This is the first time in club history that six different players scored a goal in a single game.

In all, six different Portland players tallied a goal for the first time in club history. Felipe Mora, who leads the team with 11 goals this season, opened the scoring for the Timbers in the 27th minute, followed by Dairon Asprilla just nine minutes later.

Asprilla’s scored for a second consecutive match, tallying his seventh goal of the season. Three minutes into the second half of the match, Yimmi Chara followed by scoring the third goal for Portland and his fourth this season. Notably, Diego Chara and Jaroslaw Niezgoda notched their first goals of the 2021 campaign, followed by Cristhian Paredes, who topped off the scoring for the Timbers in the 88th minute.

Sebastián Blanco recorded two assists, increasing his season total to five, trailing only Marvin Loría for most assists on the team (6). Seven Timbers players tallied an assist tonight (Blanco, Claudio Bravo, Y. Chara, D. Chara, Loría, Santiago Moreno, Dario Zuparic).

POR – Yimmi Chara (Sebastián Blanco), 48th minute: Blanco dribbled down the left side of the box and passed the ball to Yimmi Chara, who sent a curling strike from the top of the box into the right corner of the goal.

POR – Diego Chara (Yimmi Chara), 68th minute: On a breakaway, Yimmi Chara passed the ball through two Real Salt Lake defenders to find Diego Chara on the right wing. Diego Chara dribbled into the box and shot the ball low into the left corner of the goal.

POR – Jaroslaw Niezgoda (Santiago Moreno), 85th minute: Moreno and Niezgoda combined in the box. With a quick touch, Moreno laid the ball off for Niezgoda, who converted near the penalty spot.

POR – Cristhian Paredes (Marvin Loría, Claudio Bravo), 88th minute: Bravo began the play when he sent a ball to Loría on the right side of the field. Loría dribbled toward the box and cut the ball back to Paredes, who surged down field and unleashed a strike into the upper left corner of the goal from close range.
