EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon freshman Kiara Romero has been named the Pac-12 Golfer of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Romero claimed her second individual victory in just the fifth stroke-play tournament of her career last week at the San Diego State Classic, shooting 9-under par across three rounds to run away with medalist honors by five strokes. Her 9-under 207 tied for the fifth-best 54-hole performance in Oregon history.
A native of San Jose, Romero made the first hole-in-one of her collegiate career in the opening round to fuel a 3-under 69, and then capped the 36-hole day with a 2-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round. Oregon’s star freshman pulled away in the final round with a 4-under 68.
Romero has now shot par-or-better in 13 of 15 rounds to open her Oregon career, including five sub-70 performances. She became the seventh player in program history to win multiple tournaments in a single season, and just the third to do so as a true freshman.
Romero was also named the Pac-12 Golfer of the Week after opening her career as the co-medalist at the Annika Intercollegiate.
Following her victory, Romero rose 19 spots to No. 7 in the individual national rankings. She and the No. 9 Ducks will be back in action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head Island, S.C., on March 4-6.
