Romero Paces Ducks in Regular Season Finale

NAPA, Calif. — Freshman Kiara Romero shot par-or-better for the 17th time in 21 rounds on Wednesday as the Oregon women’s golf team wrapped up the 2023-24 regular season with the final round of the Chevron Silverado Showdown at Silverado Resort and Spa.

The No. 3 ranked player in the nation, Romero fired an even-par 72 to secure her sixth top-20 finish in seven tournaments, tying for 18th overall at 3-over par for the week. Fifth-year senior Ching-Tzu Chen also tied for 18th overall, and freshman Karen Tsuru gave Oregon three players in the top 25 in a tie for 23rd at 4-over par in her first collegiate tournament.

The No. 16 Ducks finished 10th overall at 23-over par after concluding play with an 8-over 296. No. 11 Northwestern and No. 9 USC tied for the team title at 4-over par.

How it Happened: The final round began with a shotgun start, and Romero got her day going at hole No. 6. After a pair of pars, Oregon’s star freshman drained back-to-back birdies to quickly get to 2 under. Two bogeys in her next five holes brought her back to even, but Romero added two more birdies to counter a pair of bogeys down the stretch to finish at even par.

Chen closed the week with a 2-over 74, making birdies on her first and last holes of the day. Freshman Ting-Hsuan Huang also had a 2-over 74 with a pair of birdies, and senior Minori Nagano completed the counting scores with a 4-over 76.

Tsuru was the top performer among Oregon’s three individuals in action, finishing with a 2-over 74 following a pair of 1-over 73s. It was a strong first tournament for Tsuru, who will be in the mix for Oregon’s lineup as the Ducks prepare for postseason play. Junior Baylee Hammericksen also put together her best round of the week, making four birdies en route to a 1-over 73.
