DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State junior catcher Adley Rutschman is one of 25 players who have been named semifinalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Wednesday.
The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the nation’s top amateur player. Previous winners include Brendan McKay (2017), Kris Bryant (2013), Bryce Harper (2010), Buster Posey (2008) and David Price (2007).
Rutschman leads the nation with a .581 on-base percentage and 66 walks, is fourth with a .428 batting average and fifth with a .783 slugging percentage. He leads Oregon State and is tied for third in the Pac-12 Conference with 16 home runs to go along with nine doubles, one triple and 53 runs batted in.
The Sherwood, Ore., native is a semifinalist for the first time. He was also on the Golden Spikes Award watch list last season.
A Golden Spikes Award voting body, consisting of national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel, previous Golden Spikes Award winner and USA Baseball staff, will vote on the list of semifinalists in order to pick three student-athletes as finalists. Their voting will carry a 95 percent weight of each semifinalists’ total.

The finalists will then be announced on Wednesday, May 29. Beginning that same day through Monday, June 10, the voting body and fans will be able to cast their final vote for the Golden Spikes Award winner.
The winner of the 42nd Golden Spikes Award will be named on Friday, June 14.
Rutschman is the ninth semifinalist all-time for the Beavers, tied for seventh-most nationally. Five of those semifinalists have come the past three seasons, and Oregon State has had at least one in five of the last six years.
