TIMBERS CLOSE OUT 2024 COACHELLA VALLEY INVITATIONAL WITH 2-1 LOSS TO CHICAGO FIRE FC

Dairon Asprilla tallies goal, Portland hosts Colorado Rapids in 2024 MLS Season Opener on Feb. 24


INDIO, Calif. – In their final 2024 Coachella Valley Invitational match, the Portland Timbers dropped a 2-1 result to Chicago Fire FC on Saturday afternoon. Dairon Asprilla scored Portland’s lone goal in thematch. Next week, the Timbers will open their 2024 MLS Season account when they host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Providence Park. 

Preseason Tournament Recap
The Timbers made their second Coachella Valley Invitational appearance, playing matches against NYCFC, San Jose Earthquakes and Chicago Fire FC (0-2-1). Dairon Asprilla and Felipe Mora scored a goal each, while Evander and Santiago Moreno both tallied an assist. Maxime Crépeau, James Pantemis and Kamal Miller made their first appearances in Green and Gold. 

Timbers’s 2024 MLS Season Opener
Portland is set to open its 14th MLS campaign against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Providence Park with a 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) kickoff. All matches will be available to watch on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish as well as localradio broadcasts, 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

Goal-Scoring Plays
POR – Dairon Asprilla (Evander), 7th minute: Evander took possession of the ball in the midfield and served it into the 18-yardbox. Asprilla, beating two Chicago defenders, hit a right-footed strike on his first touch and scored into the lower right-corner of the goal. 

CHI – Gaston Gimenez, 44th minute: Gimenez sent a long ball from the midfield, beating Pantemis off his line and scoring the second goal of the match.

CHI – Maren Haile-Selassie (Favian Herbers), 55th minute: Herbers slipped the ball to his right side to find Haile-Selassie, who took a right-footed shot outside the six-yard box and sent the ball into the left-corner of the goal.
