TIMBERS TO HOST CLUB LEÓN AND COLORADO RAPIDS IN GROUP STAGE OF LEAGUES CUP 2024 THIS SUMMER

Portland placed in West 5 Group, set to host Club León on July 28 and Colorado on Aug. 1 at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore.
 – The Portland Timbers are set to host LIGA MX side Club León inthe group stage of Leagues Cup 2024 on July 28 at Providence Park, MLS and LIGA MX announced today. Portland, selected into the West 5 Group, will also host the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 1 at Providence Park.

Tickets for the summer tournament will be available to the general public HERE onTuesday, March 26 at 12 p.m. (Pacific). Additionally, all matches will be streamed live on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish.

Portland is set to face Mexican side Club León for the first time in club history. The Timbers have faced LIGA MX teams 12 different times, including two Leagues Cup matches in 2023, eight friendly matches dating back to 2007 and in Concacaf Champions League play against Club America in May 2021.

The Timbers will also take on the Colorado Rapids for the 31st time across all competitions. Portland leads the all-time series with 13 victories, 10 losses and 7 draws. When playing at Providence Park, the Timbers have won 11 times and only dropped two results against the Rapids (11-2-2). Notably, the Timbers opened their 14th MLS season with a 4-1 victory over Colorado Rapids on Feb. 25 at Providence Park.

The group stage of the Leagues Cup tournament marks the entrance for 47 teams from the two top-tier leagues in the U.S. and Canada (Major League Soccer) and Mexico (LIGA MX). The tournament features 77 matches in four weeks during the summer where both leagues will pause their respective seasons. Every team will play two matches in the group stage, with the top two teams from each group, as determined by points, advancing to the Knockout Stage Round of 32.

All participating clubs are divided into three tiers based on the Leagues Cup Ranking (1-15, 16-30, 31-45), forming 15 groups of three clubs each, prioritizing geographical and competitive balance among the 45 clubs. For 2024, Leagues Cup will be played in two regions, East and West, with seven groups in the East and eight in the West, to regionalize travel for all participating clubs.

Advancing teams will compete in the single-game elimination knockout rounds, beginning with the Round of 32 from August 7-9, followed by the Round of 16 from August 12-13. The eight advancing teams will compete in the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals on August 16-17 before the two semifinal matches on August 20 or 21. The Leagues Cup 2024 Final and the Third-place match will be played on Saturday, August 25, which will determine the three clubs that will qualify for the 2025 Concacaf Champions League.

Fans in over 100 countries and regions – including Canada, Mexico and the United States – will be able to watch all 77 Leagues Cup matches on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app, the subscription service from Apple and Major League Soccer that is available on smart TVs, streaming devices, Apple devices, set-top boxes, game consoles, and the web at tv.apple.com. In addition, TelevisaUnivision, TV Azteca, FOX Sports (FS1), TSN and RDS will be the linear broadcast home for selected matches in Mexico, United States and Canada.
