Portland to tip-off season at LA Clippers on October 25; first game at Moda Center slated for October 27 against Orlando
Trail Blazers start In-Season Tournament against Memphis on November 3
PORTLAND, Ore. (August 17, 2023)– The Portland Trail Blazers will begin their 2023-24 regular season campaign at the LA Clippers on Wednesday, Oct. 25 before returning to Moda Center for their home opener against Orlando on Friday, Oct. 27, it was announced today by the NBA.
The Trail Blazers will play four of the first five games of the season on the road as they travel to Philadelphia, Toronto and Detroit before the team returns to Rip City to host Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Memphis Grizzlies for two straight home games starting on Friday, Nov. 3.
New to the NBA this season is the Inaugural In-Season Tournament which will tip off on Friday, Nov. 3 and culminate with the Championship on Saturday Dec. 9 in Las Vegas. The In-Season Tournament will consist of two stages: Group Play and the Knockout Rounds. Each team will play four designated Group Play games on “Tournament Nights” where the Trail Blazers will face Memphis at home on Nov. 3, at Utah on Nov. 14, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers at Moda Center on Nov. 17 and at Phoenix on Nov. 21 as part of West Group A.
Eight teams (four per conference) will advance to the Knockout Rounds: the team with the best standing in Group Play games in each of the six groups and two “wild cards” (the team from each conference with the best record in Group Play games that finished second in its group). The tiebreaker procedures are available here. The Knockout Rounds will be single-elimination games in the Quarterfinals (played in NBA team markets on Monday, Dec. 4 and Tuesday, Dec. 5), Semifinals and Championship. The qualifying teams will compete for a prize pool and the new In-Season Tournament trophy, the NBA Cup.
Each of the 22 teams that do not advance to the Quarterfinals of the In-Season Tournament will be assigned two regular-season games (one home game and one away game) that will be played on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Friday, Dec. 8. A formulaic approach will determine the matchups for these 22 games using the Group Play standings in each conference (fifth through 15th).
All 82 Trail Blazers games will be televised by ROOT SPORTS and ROOT SPORTS Plus, the television home of the Portland Trail Blazers, or on national carriers. Portland is scheduled to play one game on TNT and five games on NBATV. The team’s nationally televised appearances are highlighted by a home matchup with the Miami Heat on Tuesday, Feb. 27 (TNT), vs. Washington on Thursday, Dec. 21 (NBATV), at San Antonio on Friday, Jan. 26 (NBATV), home vs. Philadelphia on Monday, Jan. 29 (NBATV), at Denver on Sunday, Feb. 4 (NBATV) and Boston on Monday, March 11 (NBATV). All games will also be aired on flagship station Rip City Radio AM-620 and the Trail Blazers Radio Network.
Portland will play seven of their first 10 games on the road on the west coast with matchups at Sacramento (Nov. 8), L.A. Lakers (Nov. 12) and Utah (Nov. 14). The Trail Blazers will then return home to play four of the next five games at Moda Center, highlighted by Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers (Nov. 15), Anthony Davis and the L.A. Lakers (Nov. 17) and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder (Nov. 19). The month of December will see several home marquee matchups including Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks (Dec. 16), Steph Curry and Golden State’s first visit to Moda Center (Dec. 17) and the first meeting of Scoot Henderson and Victor Wembanyama in back-to-back games as the Trail Blazers host San Antonio on December 28 and 29.
The Trail Blazers will bring in 2024 with a seven-game road trip beginning with a New Year’s Day game at Phoenix (Jan. 1) followed by matchups including at Dallas (Jan. 3 and Jan. 5), Brooklyn (Jan. 7) and New York (Jan. 9). Portland will end the month of January in Moda Center against three Eastern Conference foes including the Chicago Bulls (Jan. 28), Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers (Jan. 29) and Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks (Jan. 31).
February will feature seven of nine games in the month at home in Portland with all seven games being the longest homestand of the season. Portland will host Zion Williamson, C.J. McCollum and the New Orleans Pelicans (Feb. 10), two consecutive matchups with Anthony Edwards and Minnesota (Feb. 13 and Feb. 15) and Nikola Jokic and the 2023 NBA Champion Denver Nuggets (Feb. 23) post All-Star Break.
The 2023-24 campaign will end with eight of the final 11 games on the road for Portland, including a season-longest tying seven-game road trip with visits to Atlanta (March 27), Miami (March 29) and Boston (April 7). Portland will end its home slate with matchups against New Orleans (April 9), Golden State (April 11) and Houston (April 12).
