Viking Men Tabbed For Fourth Place In Big Sky Coaches Poll

PORTLAND – The top of the Big Sky Conference basketball standings in 2020-21 figures to look similar to last season’s according to the league’s preseason polls released today. Big Sky titleist Eastern Washington is the consensus pick once again, while the coaches poll has the Portland State Vikings tabbed for fourth place – the same place they finished in 2019-20.

PSU has seen a major turnover in personnel from last season, when it finished 18-14 overall, 12-8 and fourth in the Big Sky. However, fourth-year Head Coach Barret Peery has restocked his roster by adding a slew of talented transfers, six from Division I schools, three of which have played in the Pac-12. Clearly, Peery’s peers around the league have taken notice and expect the Vikings to be contenders once again.

Eastern Washington (23-8, 16-4 last year) was picked first in the Coaches’ Poll with 99 voting points and nine first-place votes. Montana (18-13, 14-6) was picked second with 86 points and one first-place vote. Weber State was third at 73 points, while the Vikings took fourth with 67 points and one first-place vote.

The media poll came out a little different. Eastern Washington was still on top, followed by Montana. After that came Northern Colorado and Montana State. The media didn’t give the Vikings as much respect as the coaches. They picked PSU for seventh place in the 11-team league.

On Tuesday, the Big Sky released the Preseason All-Conference. It was no surprise that Jacob Davison of Eastern Washington was the preseason MVP. Kim Aiken Jr., also of Eastern, was picked to the team. Bodie Hume of Northern Colorado, Jubrile Belo of Montana State, Cameron Shelton of Northern Arizona, and Michael Steadman of Montana all made the team. No Vikings were named preseason All-Big Sky Conference.

Portland State opens its season on Nov. 25 at the University of Washington. The Vikings will also play Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 27) and San Diego (Nov. 28) in the multi-team event in Seattle. Game times and broadcast information is TBA.
