EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon head baseball coach Mark Wasikowski announced Wednesday the addition of pitching coach Jake Angier to his staff.
Angier comes to Oregon after spending the last six seasons at Sacramento State. He started his tenure with the Hornets as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before being promoted to pitching coach in 2017 and associate head coach in 2019.
“Jake has proven to be one of the best pitching coaches on the West Coast in recent years,” Wasikowski said. “His connection to the Pacific Northwest, being originally from Seattle, has allowed him to recruit quality pitching pieces from the region to his staff. His familiarity with local high school, travel ball and community college baseball coaches in the Northwest will be a tremendous benefit to the recruiting direction I would like Oregon baseball to be known for. His staffs at Sacramento State have consistently improved and led the conference in many of the key statistical areas which has clearly separated himself amongst his competitors.”
During Angier’s three seasons as Sacramento State’s pitching coach, the Hornets boasted the Western Athletic Conference’s top pitching staff. Sac State led the WAC in ERA all three seasons, while also leading the conference in WHIP, strikeout-to-walk ratio and hits allowed per nine innings each season.
Sacramento State advanced to NCAA Regionals three times in Angier’s six seasons with the Hornets and twice (2017, 2019) with him serving as the team’s pitching coach. In 2018, Sacramento State’s pitching staff finished among the nation’s top 12 in four separate statistical categories: walks allowed per nine innings (2nd), strikeout-to-walk ratio (5th), shutouts (T8th) and WHIP (12th). In all, the Hornets had five top 50 national statistical rankings in 2018, while cracking the top 50 in three categories in 2017 and four in 2019. While at Sacramento State, Angier was a member of Reggie Christiansen’s staff and coached with current Illinois State head coach Steve Holm and Bill Kernen. Holm served as Wasikowski’s pitching coach at Purdue from 2017-18, while Kernen spent time as the head coach at Cal State Northridge (1989-95) and Cal State Bakersfield (2009-2015).
Before coaching at Sac State, Angier spent three seasons (2011-13) as the pitching coach at North Dakota State where his pitching staffs set a number of school records. The South Dakota State graduate started his coaching career at his alma mater where he was the pitching coach while working as a graduate assistant.
Angier graduated from SDSU with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2007 and a master’s degree in sports pedagogy in 2010. The Bellevue, Wash., native also spent two years as a player at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Wash.
